Ice Maiden

from Under the Sun by Not for Pussies

/

about

Partly inspired by Jenny Diski's terrific book "Skating to Antartica", which brought back some childhood memories for Jan.

lyrics

Ice Maiden

Mmm, can I wallow in boundless expanses of white upon white
in a nothing but whiteness
You wanted me for your little Ice Princess, so perfect and poised
in my hours of practice

Fingers picking out the notes – on the page in front of me
Fingers following the dots – floating on the frozen sea
Fingers falling on the beat – of a stark metronome
Waiting for the blade to fall – under your gaze…

And all the while my mind raced into whiteness
white upon white in great boundless expanses
I’d have a sleigh to escape from the Ice Queen
mushing my dogs deeper into my daydream

Playing parabolic scales – Practice makes perfect
Fingers with their bitten nails – I would never be perfect
Thought you had the golden child – Look and see, a prodigy
but I was growing into something wild – I was me, becoming free

Pulling the notes off, like taking the wings off
I’m perched on the piano stool, MY wings taking off
while you pin me down like a butterfly collector
I flap and I search for my own source of nectar

I was once lost, in boundless expanses of white upon white
in a nothing but whiteness
Oh you wanted me for your little Ice Princess
But the spell broke and I tumbled down, useless

Racing over empty ice – into light, into flight
Watching as my Nemesis – disappears into night
Waking up from frozen Winter into Spring – colour filling up my senses
Suddenly alive to everything - Everything

We felt we're into an era in our lives where Bette Davis' quote about getting older (it's "not for pussies") felt very apt - and our music reflects this - and the experience of having lived a little! ...
