about

This song is about the twilight between life and death.
The music is based on a simple repeating guitar pattern, backed with soft harmony vocals and fretless bass which introduces a haunting, muted trumpet. The main verse uses a spare arrangement of delayed guitar and fretless bass which opens into the rich chorus of layered E-bows and vocoder over a rhythmic pulse using 12-string guitar and tsuras. The song ends with the return of the echoing trumpet...

lyrics

Between Worlds

He greets you with a smile
but doesn't quite know who you really are
Oh, he says, It's been a while
and how on earth did we all ever get this far?

Get the coffee on and go pull up a chair
Take off your jacket son and don't just stand there like all these folk seem to do

His hands trace out the diagram
swirling colours in the canvas of his life
Get the glasses out and pour a dram
Here's a toast to you, my family, my wife

All these college pals and mates I know from school
laughing at the times when we all played the fool
I see them waiting in the wings

Words are spoken, tears are shed as we gather round his bed
I'm playing home movies in my head, hear his laughter, things he said
His hands are reaching for the door. He checks his watch, it's time to go
His eyes don't focus any more - they see worlds that we don't see
And all of those who've gone before gather round to set him free
Ah, between worlds ...

We felt we're into an era in our lives where Bette Davis' quote about getting older (it's "not for pussies") felt very apt - and our music reflects this - and the experience of having lived a little! ...
