This is a biggie.. in so many ways! For months, Janette found doing any kind of work nigh impossible, but this song slowly took shape, expressing her state of mind and taking you into her nightmare world, fuelled by painkillers... Part 2 uses the analogy of a wrestling match (the idea came from the many John Irving books we've read over the years) - where she's being attacked on all sides by a tag team of wrestlers.
The general sound harks back to the '70s and something Brian calls "the string-bikini theory"! We are both very influenced by the sounds we heard in our formative teens... Van Der Graaf Generator, Roxy Music, T Rex... those dirty sax sounds, Hammond organs, fuzzed up guitars (and bass!) as well as interesting time sigs.
It was a real catharsis for Jan to let rip and express this vocally. We think it gets the feelings across - but with a beat!

lyrics

Headgirl

(Part 1)

Woke up one day with the walls closing in
Just being upright took some discipline
The room is spinning – I can’t take this pain
It’s like a bomb has gone off in my brain
Raided the cupboard and swallowed some meds
Can’t understand what’s going on in my head
Stumbled around and then went back to bed
There’s no escape – Oh, I wish I were dead

I called the doctor – I need some advice
Can’t take the pressure, my head’s in a vice
He sent me off to see some specialist
to rule out anything that he might have missed

My palms are sweaty and my mouth is all dry
Trying not to lose it in the drumming MRI
These tubes and needles are freaking me out
The drugs go in and my precious blood goes out
They fill in forms and they scratch their heads
I’m a receptacle for all sorts of meds…
I’m just a face in a hospital bed
I’ve lost the plot, yeah I’m losing the thread…

(Part 2)

There’s a hooker hiding over in the corner
and I’m the rookie out on the mat
He’s got his buddies running interference
so he can knock me flat

Now this gorilla’s on my shoulder
and he’s telling me I gotta do a drop
I need to sandbag or oversell
just to win me a pop

Now this is feeling something like a beatdown
I’m losing count of all the heels
Oh, I’m suspicious of a screwjob
This wasn’t in the deal!

Thought I was number one contender
somehow maintaining my no-sell
I’m in the ring with a whole stable
and they’re stretching me all to hell!

!Part 3)

Headgirl! What's going on inside your head, girl?!
Crazy, crazy Headgirl!

And then my head explodes!

Not for Pussies Perth, UK

Not for Pussies came into being in 2008, although Brian and Janette Kidd have been together - and playing music together (and with others) for much, much longer.
We felt we're into an era in our lives where Bette Davis' quote about getting older (it's "not for pussies") felt very apt - and our music reflects this - and the experience of having lived a little! ...
