The intro developed when the Doc was messing about in the studio having recently dived back into his old Tangerine Dream albums. Janette wasn't consistently available at the time and the idea of using sequencers was appealing - so this formed the basis of the introduction. Janette then added the poem by Friedrich Holderlin - from her German days - and this gave us the title and the start of a linear narrative for the whole album. The subsequent "song" section began as a sequence the Doc had messed about with on his acoustic for months. Once put together with a great lead synth noise found on the Roland guitar synth along with some reverse lead guitars, it started to take shape. But nobody expected the impact of those harmony vocals.........the Sun God indeed!
The track art is based on a great photo of Janette's friend, Mariano Lorenzo Manzoratte, (as a teenager) from Argentina. Many thanks for his kind permission to use it]
lyrics
Die jungen Loken badet’ im Goldgewoelk’;
Und jetzt noch blikt mein Auge von selbst nach ihm;
Dem Sonnengott (Through fire we live)
Wake up …. Sleepy head …. Wake up!
Wake up …. Sleepy head …
Erebus has given way
to the heralds of the day
Golden angels spread their wings
and enfold you ….
In the presence of the light
Bringing warmth and giving life
to the ones, who drink it in
Our beloved …
Wake up …. Open up … Unfurl
Reach out … open up….
(Michael Hamburger's translation of the original German poem)
To the Sun-God
Where are you? Dazzled, drunken my soul grows faint
And dark with so much gladness; for only now
It was I watched while weary with his
Course, the enrapturing sun-god lingered
To bathe his youthful locks in the golden clouds;
And, full of him, my eyes of themselves gaze on,
Though far from here, to pious nations
Who still revere him, by now he’s journeyed.
You, Earth, I love who join me in mourning him,
And like the griefs of children our mourning turns
To sleep and, much as in the lyre-strings
Fluttering winds will run wild and whisper
Until the master’s finger lures forth a tone
More pure, so dreams and mist all around us play
Until the loved one comes again and
Kindles new life in our minds, new vigour.

Many thanks to our friend, Mariano Lorenzo Manzoratte for his photo, which we used in the accompanying image.
Not for Pussies came into being in 2008, although Brian and Janette Kidd have been together - and playing music together
(and with others) for much, much longer.
We felt we're into an era in our lives where Bette Davis' quote about getting older (it's "not for pussies") felt very apt - and our music reflects this - and the experience of having lived a little! ......more
supported by 4 fans who also own “Dem Sonnengott (Through fire we live)”
a side project by Janette and Brain Kidd who did release most works under the band name,"Not For Pussies" In my humble opinion this the best they ever did. if you like Steve Hackett with some Kraut influences you can't go wrong here. Highly recommended! willy vlyminck
